Citadel Investment Group

Company description:

Citadel's roots can be traced to Harvard College in the late 1980s when Ken Griffin developed his first convertible bond arbitrage model and began trading from his dorm room. After graduating from Harvard in three years, Ken moved to Chicago to work for Glenwood Capital Management, and just over a year later, started Citadel in November 1990 with $4.6 million in capital. A hallmark of Citadel's success has been diversifying into new investment strategies and businesses opportunistically over time. Whereas Citadel's early focus was strictly on US convertibles, Ken expanded the business to include investments in Japanese equity warrants and European convertible bonds in the early 1990s. In 1994, Citadel entered several non-credit related businesses. In the early part of this decade, we added both energy expertise and fundamental capabilities in areas such as equities. Throughout approximately 17 years of history, we have successfully integrated businesses to create one of the world's leading financial institutions focused on alternative investment strategies. Today, Citadel's operations include nine global, proprietary investing businesses: Global Credit, Global Energy, Global Equities, Global Markets and Quantitative Strategies, Global Rates, Principal Strategies, Securitized Products, Emerging Markets and Reinsurance. In early 2007 we launched Citadel Solutions and Citadel Alternative Asset Management, our administrative services and fund of hedge fund businesses, extending our platform in the alternative investment industry. Under the direction of the Citadel team, we have set out to redefine what a firm like ours can do in the finance industry. Today, Citadel is a global leader with over one thousand employees and approximately $15 billion in investment capital. Our global footprint reaches across six offices including our headquarters in Chicago as well as New York, San Francisco, London, Tokyo and Hong Kong. Our performance is distinguished -- since 1998 Citadel has generated over $10 billion in net profits.
