Electronic Resumes
Today many recruiters and managers prefer to receive resumes via email. Your resume, in email format, must be concise, easy to read, and organized appropriately.
In order to make sure your emailed resumes receive maximum exposure, there are rules to follow:
- Use ASCII format as this is the lowest common denominator for electronic text
- Save as a text file in your word processing program
- Cut and paste resume into the body of your email (do not send as an attachment)
- Avoid line wrap by limiting to 72 characters
- Include key words, nouns, and phrases that highlight technical/professional areas of expertise, and industry-related jargon
- Showcase strong points first
- Include a "Skills" section
- Run spell and grammar check but don't rely on it completely
- Test by sending it to yourself before sending to potential employers
- Include a cover "letter" (opening paragraph of your email) stating that you are interested in a position and why
